My Baby

Hello:

I know I am not supposed to post this message here. But I am desperately looking for some answers. Here is the case that we have been through.

I and my wife had a silent birth of our baby recently. The baby was only one week from the expected date of delivery. All the time of pregnancy was smooth and there were no complications with either baby or mom. There had been a lot of usual tests that they do at different points during pregnancy and all the tests were ok. We used to visit the doctor once every month initially and then every next week and then once in a week during last month.

Just one week from the expected date of delivery, my wife felt that the baby had not moved since she woke up. So we rushed to the doctor's office at about 10:30 am and the doctor checked her using the external devlce that they use to monitor the babies heart beat (as in every visit) but could not get the heart beat. Then she checked my wife (viginal) and said that the babies head was down and that the cervix was closed (as she has been doing to find out if the cervix has dilated for the last three weeks on every weekly visit since we were in the last month). Then she put my wife on ultra sound and she declared that the baby's heart is not beating and that the baby has passed away. It was a shocking news to us and we asked the doctor what might have occured. She said that she did not know. She guessed that it might be from strangulation from umblical cord but she would know better after delivery.

Then they induced labor. Next day my wife delivered the baby. The doctor told us that she knew the reason. She said that umblical cord originated from the edge of placenta instead of from somewhere in the middle. Because of that as baby grew the umblical cord brock/detached from there causing the baby to pass away.

I guess my question is:

Could this be detected in the ultrasound? Is the doctor supposed to check for this case during pregnancy?

I would really appreciate if you could answer this question as soon as possible.

Thanks.
