Dear, June, I am forwarding your message to the History of Ultrasound Forum at OBGYN.net where it will be archived. Thanks for this. If you would like to elaborate on your history, please go to: http://forums.obgyn.net/ultrasound-history/ <http://forums.obgyn.net/ultrasound-history/> I know you could not have worked with Holmes & Gottesfeld and not have more to tell us about those early days. Do you have any photos that could be scanned and shared?

Thanks for your participation.

Peace, Terry J. Sorry I've been so slow to respond. I started in ultrasound in 1973 as an apprentice (with no prior medical experience) in Dr. Holmes' lab at CGH, CU School of Med. Talk about OLD! The equipment, that is. We had that gun turret right in our lab along with all the old polaroid film envelopes. It gave the lab that vintage museum feel. We worked with Unirad and Picker static B-scan; and HP for the cardiac. Ken Gottesfeld was our OB/GYN guru; Dr. Joseph Holmes was our abdominal guru; and Spangler our cardiac guru. Since we were the center for learning at that time, within a month or so, I was actually training docs and other techs from around the world. Truly the blind leading the blind. I still have vivid memories of it all, so if you would like any other info, let me know.

Gerson, this is precisely the kind of personal recollections that this web site was designed to archive... and fits perfectly in the definition of a "polybiography"... the history by many of the many events leading up to the current state of sonography. Thanks... I hope this encourages others to add their recollections, including names, dates, & places. Sonography is still young, but the early days in the last half of the 20th century need to be documented before those who participated forget or are gone. I am working on interviewing the folks who had the first ultrasound machine here in Arkansas. Eventually, I will also document the beginnings of sonography in Austin and Central Texas... Someone else will have to do the Houston Medical Center around MD Anderson, which is where the first unit in Texas may have been... I believe... but do not know for sure. Thanks again for your participation... feel free to add more as they may occur to you. Peace, Terry J DuBose ----------------------------------------------

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
