Re: New PC-- no holy warFrom: Brian Gill (bgill@ambassadorweb.com)Mon Jun 4 10:22:46 2001
Joe, Don't wait for Windows XP. Chances are, it won't come out this fall. Windows 95 was scheduled for the early 90's (they called it Windows '95 to actually attach a "ship date" to it). Windows 2000 was actually Windows NT 5.0, which was originally scheduled to ship in 1997. Go with WIndows ME or Windows 2000. Don't wait. Besides, if all you're doing is using Office, Internet, and basic computing, you hardly need anything more powerful than a 400 MHz PC with 64MB of RAM. Recommendations: Get more RAM than Hard-Disk memory (256MB RAM recommended)... this will ensure that your computer will run future programs smoothly. You won't need a hard drive larger than 10MB. Go with Dell, they've got good service and their comptuers are reliable. Plus, it includes a one-year warranty (if they service in India... I'm not sure). We like our Dell computers here... they're good. Really, don't overkill it no matter what they try and sell you. If Windows came out with a new Operating System that made everything obsolete... they'd kill their own business. I set my parents up with a $250 PC 200MHz with Windows 95 for browsing the web, email, and basic word processing. They're as happy as can be, and I actually prefer the machine because it runs faster than my 500 MHz PC!!! (Less software on it). PS: I prefer the Macintosh, honestly ... but realistically it's not a great choice for business needs when everyone else is using a PC. Hope that helps. -Brian -----Original Message----- From: ultrasound@obgyn.net [mailto:ultrasound@obgyn.net]On Behalf Of DR.JOE ANTONY Sent: Monday, June 04, 2001 1:24 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ULTRASOUND Subject: New PC-- no holy war Dear Terry, Josh and all, I am glad to see I have started a small storm in a tea cup. Anyway Macs are too expensive and service/ software scanty in this place -- India that is. I think I'll opt for a locally assembled PC (components imported). Thanks all of you guys and gals who responded so generously to my queries. Are there any good websites for new pc buyers? Thanks again, Joe , India. -----Original Message----- From: DuboseTerryJ@uams.edu <DuboseTerryJ@uams.edu> To: Multiple recipients of list ULTRASOUND <ultrasound@mail.medispecialty.com> Date: Friday, June 01, 2001 11:36 PM Subject: RE: no holy war Dr. Copel, Very well put. I particularly like the genetic analogy. I know you are correct, I am still holding a grudge against APPLE for abandoning the Apple IIe with no upgrade path to the Mac... old grudges die hard. Guess it is time to give up on this one. As for the Evil Empire (AKA MicroSoft), I have always held their computability in high esteem... there is code in BASIC BABY that ran on the earliest versions of DOS on an old 8088 that will still run on the latest Windows platform... of course it still looks like old DOS....
TGIF.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education.
