The medical term is defined as (from Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictionary):

ectopic

ek-topcik

1. Out of place; said of an organ not in its proper position, or of a pregnancy occurring elsewhere than in the cavity of the uterus. Syn: aberrant(3), heterotopic(1), imperforate anus(2).

2. In cardiography, denoting a heartbeat that has its origin in some abnormal focus; developing from a focus other than the sinoatrial node.

Origin

[see ectopia]

Therefore an ectopic pregnancy is one that is not in it's proper location in the uterus... often in the fallopian tube(s), which may be referred to as a "tubal pregnancy".

Hope this helps.
