Informal Case: Unusual Yolk SacFrom: Martin Necas (exiled@clear.net.nz)Tue Nov 14 00:38:41 2000
Dear Dr Moroder, and Sonographers worldwide, Could the images represent a small area of active hemorrhage? While the pictures are certainly not typical for this, active bleeding can be seen on 2D ultrasound. As to the yolk sac, "funny" yolk sacs tend make me worried about the possibility of poor prognosis, so I would suggest rescanning the patient in a few week's time to confirm viability. If the patient is asymptomatic (e.g. no bleeding) then, I suppose one could wait till 12weeks or so at which time one can confirm viability and do nuchal translucency (hence killing 2 birds with one stone). : )
