Dr. Smeltzer, welcome back... your point about computer aided instruction is well taken. It is particularly pointed for Sonography. Ultrasound is so operator dependent that I want to assure you that my students spend over 80% of their time in clinical internships. But the use of Web based courses and testing has allowed the students to spend time in new and varied clinical sites that would not have been available if they had to come to a lecture here on campus every day.

In testimony to this process, I will quote one of my student's comments from yesterday. She is in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a 200 mile drive from our campus. The discussion came up in the Course Forum, the discussion was about musculoskeletal sonography:

We do all different kinds of exams like this in the Fayetteville hospital. I think it just depends on where you live. I now see what a good idea it was to come to Fayetteville for my last clinic rotation. I am learning so much since they do everything in one lab. Stacy

In defense of this method of teaching, it is only offered to our Senior students who have already had over a year of education in our local clinics and classes. We know these students, and so far have not attempted to do a complete program remotely... which I agree is fraught with problems. The quality of the clinical educational experience will be critical to distance education.

My computer awaits your's response.

Terry,

One of the great joys of computing is the universalization of education and knowledge and thought. Of course this can go too far. Why don't you have your computer call mine so they can review this for us.....

Hmmm....

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
