Re: CPT codeFrom: Joshua Copel (joshua.copel@yale.edu)Thu Nov 2 12:10:13 2000
Yes it is true that Medison has obtained a letter from HCFA confirming that 76375 can be used to code for 3D reconstruction of ultrasound images. Previously it had been applied to MR and CT only. HCFA does not assign dollar amounts, since there are regional practice cost adjustments to all codes, and every other insurer has its own fee schedule. That code has 3.91 RVUs assigned, divided as 3.71 technical and 0.2 professional. In other words if you bill global its a great deal. If you bill professional only (modifier -26) like we do its not very good for the doctors. It is also a lot more than a standard complete ob (76805). The challenge now for us all professionally will be to see if we can avoid uing this code to convert baby pictures into majhor revenue streams. Personally think that it should only be used in situations where a 3D picture is involved in diagnosis of anomalies. That can take a lot of time, though I think this is way out of proportion to what we get day in & day out for complex 2D fetal scans. This change was not initiated by AIUM or ACOG. Don't know if any professional groups were involved. I saw it confirmed in a letter to Medison from HCFA staff. Also don't know if other insurers will accept the change, because it's not an official change to the CPT book. That has to go through the AMA CPT committee.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
