Mande-

Thanks for the nice words. I attended LSU/Charity for one year (my intern year) and really enjoyed it. I left because I was invited back to Tampa, and originally wanted to train there. It was a tough decision because, as you said, one gets great training at Charity. Plus, it's hard to find good jambalaya in Florida!

I think being married in med school or residency can be difficult, but very worthwhile. A supportive spouse can be extremely helpful during med school and residency, but he or she will quickly realize that free time with you will be rare and very concentrated. No more lounging around on the couch watching TV all night! Instead, it will be "I have 2 hours available Wednesday." Unfortunately, there were a lot of divorces in my med school class and during residency. The couples that stayed together talked a lot and made compromises with their time.

I think having a baby in med school or residency (depending on the specialty) is extremely difficult. I was in practice 7 years before we had a baby, so I can't tell you what it's like to have children during residency. However, surgical residencies are extremely difficult, and you can't work "part time" in order to raise your baby. Someone else (spouse, parent, nanny) is going to raise your baby during a good chunk of your residency. (For example, first year residents in ob/gyn programs typically work over 80 hours per week, sometimes more). Other residencies require less hours per week, so having children is less stressful.

Good luck with your career! Have some red beans and rice for me.

Ashley
