Danita, I am a third year resident in OB/GYN currently in Phoenix, AZ. Your questions are all valid. If you went into OB/GYN, you would not necassarily be required to do both OB and GYN. You can be in a practice and to almost exclusivly OB if you want. That is what is so nice about this specialty, you can do basically whatever you want. OB only, or Gyn only, or preventative care/health care maintenance, etc.

If your university does not offer "pre-med" most people major in things like biology, zoology, biochemistry etc.. all you need to do is pick a major that will cover most of the requirements for the medical school you would like to attend (and most medical schools have similar requirements) and then fill in the remainder of needed courses. There are resources at your university library that tell you what courses to take for each medical school.

You need a B.S. to get into most med schools, therefore you cannot skip right into medical school from high school.

Hope that helps James M. Johnson, M.D. PGY-3
