Actually, what you need is a Linksys "EtherFast Cable/DSL modem BEFSR41 It is a hub/router/firewall box. You plug the cable from the cable modem into it, plug you other machines/hub into it and presto instant network.

What this equipment does is get the dhcp address from the cable for one side of the router and then it serves as a dchp server for the home machines. It is administrated via a web browser from any of your home machines. I like it because you can BLOCK a lot of the SECURITY holes on the cable system ( if you have a pc on a cable system without a firewall I can OWN your box, even if you dont have file sharing turned on).

For medical stuff you can also do IPSec, and PPPoE for encrypted traffic and even remotely administer the thing. It is a steal at $149 at compusa!. The are similar devices from D-Link and some other vendors.

a typical config looks like

cable modem |
linksys |
|-----------|---------|---------|
hub G3 Sun pc (Linux) 10mbps 100Mbps 10mbps 100mbps |
|-----|----|----|
pc mac hub NexT NT | |
|------|-----|------------|
pc mac hp printer MicroVax WinME
