Not true. I read email in emacs on solaris and escape them all. I don't open attachments sent in proprietary Microsoft formats at all, but rather ask the sender to "save as" a non-propreitary format such as html or pdf, even if it's MS's version of those. This not only saves me from viruses, but also has the feature that I never have to pay Microsoft money just to read someone's email message. Now if I could only start a movement instead of everyone giving up..
That said, http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgi-bin/browse/objweb works great for translating file formats. And of course if you convert a doc file to html, any macro viruses are killed. Thanks for that tip I got on this list.
Regards, Charles
