Obstetric cholestasisFrom: caroline (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 28 Dec 1999 13:47:28 -0600 (CST)
I am 41 years old and 34 weeks pregnant with a so-far uneventful, normal pregnancy. About 3 weeks ago I began experiencing allover itching with no rash. My doctor ordered blood tests to check on liver function but due to lab mess-ups (three blood tests have now been drawn) I still don't have the results. I'm obviously worried and did some research - and my symptoms seem to be consistent with obstetric cholestasis, being a problem with the liver that can develop during the third trimester resulting in excessive bile salts in the blood - thus, the itching (which is driving me CRAZY!). The research I've done indicates that (1) there's no real treatment for this (although there is treatment for the itching) other than delivery and, more importantly (2) there seems to be some connection between this and stillbirth. My reading recommends delivery before 38 weeks to reduce the chance of problems. My doctors have told me that there's no proven connection between OC and stillbirths - any thoughts on this? I don't want to be overreacting. However - I want to take every precaution possible. I'm not thrilled about the idea of induction or cesaerian, but the alternative is too horrible to even contemplate. I appreciate the insight of any doctors who have experience or knowledge about this - there is not much information out there and what there is seems to come from the UK. Thanks so much - sorry this is so long. Caroline
