Usually it is secondary to a procedure, be it abortions (usually several, not one), cone biopsy of the cervix or other procedure where the cervix is involved. It has been seen in first pregnancies with no previous procedures too.

Depending upon the recommendations of your doctor, (and other factors I may not be aware of) normal activities can usually be resumed within 1-2 weeks of the procedure.
