Re: Success Rate of IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

Hi Lisa,

I've went through the same diagnosis as you, though it was primary infertility that led me to the clomid IUI's. I had only one complete proceedure then had to take a break from the stress of five and a half years of trying and facing limited healthcare coverages for infertility.

Anyway, to answer your question you need to first consider that the odds of perfectly healthy couple with perfectly timed intercourse, etc, will conceive with only about a 25% chance in any given month. (Add to that the fact that doctors won't even generally see a couple until they've had a year to try with the perfect timing thing before beginning the infertility work up.) So your odds with the IUI, because its "perfectly timed" and you are getting past any potential cervical mucous problems, should be about the same, with the exception of any possible hormone wackiness that could interfere with implantation, etc, and decrease the odds. So I'd say give it four tries and hopefully you'll suceed before then. I know someone, though, who had to try *12* times with IUI for it to work. My insurance thought it could be done in only three, but then I convinced them to give me another try after the first failed and I was worried about the next two not being enough, given the odds. Only, it turned out I didn't need it. I had to have a break, gave up, went back on BCPs and then off again three months later. Two months after that, not even timing or even "trying" - no clomid, I became pregnant.

GOOD LUCK! I hope the next one works for you. I know how disappointing it can be when you think and hope and wish with all your heart that that proceedure will end your suffering for wanting to be pregnant. My one completed IUI, had it been sucessful, would have made me a first time expectant mommy with a due date of my 30th birthday, 12/25/98. It was a HUGE let down! Please check back in a short while and tell us some good news. :-)
