marshella, unfortunately it is not quite as easy as that. so many hospital have very different standarrds of care. i think the best thing is for you to read several different books such as Bradley's books and i cannot remember off the top of my head and dont have time to go find them. and then sit with your doctor and discuss step by step the policies of the hospital you are delivering at. some women make up birth plans stating what they desire. i think a birth plan is a good starting point for discussion. i agree with you that it is apalling. unfortunately, i was so exhausted aftre my c-section (and had planty of drugs) i did not care as long as my son was healthy.
