They're called RCTs (randominzed controlled trials) which include double blind (medication and placebo and neither the doctor nor the patients know which they got). RCTs are the most reliable studies.

Bias can be interjected into a retrospective study without meaning to (by the authors) and the criteria for the study, if looked at retrospectively, may not be the same for all participants since the information is gleaned from data already produced.
