Pre-term labor or irritable uterus?From: Kara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 2 Nov 1999 13:16:12 -0600 (CST)
I am 21 weeks LMP and have been experiencing contractions--yesterday they were 3 minutes apart, uncomfortable with pressure on the pelvic floor and a mild lower back ache. In my first pregnancy, I was treated for pre-term labor at 29 weeks with terbutaline, and delivered at 34 weeks by c-section because of severe pre-eclampsia and a breech presentation. My questions is: the Doctor took a swab today to test for fetal fibronectin(?) The NP said they debated whether to do it now or wait a couple of weeks (is this too early). And, she said the results would tell whether I am having or will have pre-term labor or whether or not I just have an irritable uterus. What's the difference? If I am diagnosed with irritable uterus, do I still have to worry about delivering early? Any information on this topic will help. Thanks.
