Re: donating blood to yourself?

Interesting note... My cousin developed HELLP Syndrome with her first and only pregnancy, and required platelets minutes before an emergency c-section to save both herself and her baby. She's fine, her daughter just turned 5! My uncle asked about blood donation before she became so ill, can family members donate and bank blood? I toy with this idea because my daughter had 4 blood product transfusions (2 fresh plasma, 2 red blood cells). I was told by her neonatologist that they had never had a baby become infected with HIV or Hepatitis C since they used a very small group of special donors for neonates at this particular hospital. Needing blood from the general population, however is a totally different story...
