How long does it keep? I have just no luck today. The second time I wrote a whole big answer and my ISP threw me off! Here goes again. Blood loss requiring transfusion from C/S uncommon and usually, more than 1 or 2 units will be needed. It would be difficult to impossible to donate that much. In addition, youmay become anemic in order to donate and that would be bad for the pregnancy. An apparatus called "cell-saver" can be used at surgery to attempt to return the blood lost to the patient. I truly understand your concerns but feel that auto-donation carries risks and the amount needed in a real big "bleed" cannot safely be auto-donated. Packed red blood cells usually last about a month. Certain blood products can lst longer.
