Hi, Bonnie!

I'm sorry this reply is so late coming.. I just found the forum today. But I wanted to share my experience with my c-sections.

My first son, born in '93, was induced at 36 1/2 weeks for low amniotic fluid. Started on pitocin at 7 am, broke my water at noon, and by 10:30 pm, they decided that I needed a c-section because I had only progressed to a 3 and my contractions were showing up well on the monitors. (I wasn't feeling anything, and to this day, after three babies, I still don't know what a PAINFUL contraction is...lol)

My second son was born in '96, and I was diagnosed with placenta previa right at about 20 weeks along. I knew that a scheduled c-section was imminent. And wouldn't you know it, I went into labor on my own (back ache that was severe, just like the only pain I had during labor with my first son, was my indicator to go to the hospital). Once they ruled out dehydration or infection as the cause of the contractions, they knew I'd have the baby soon anyway. So I had another c-section. Good thing I did, because the delivering doc said that my uterus wasn't in good shape and probably would've torn away within the next two days anyway (placenta abruptia) and things would've been MUCH worse.

Well, my third baby, a little girl, was born on Nov. 1, of 1998. I spoke to my doctor about VBAC and she was incredibly supportive of my decision. I went into labor on Halloween (again, the achy back feeling) and could feel "tightening" in my tummy, but nothing painful. We got to the hospital at 10 or so on Halloween night, and they had me walk and walk and walk to see if I changed. I did, so they kept me. By the next day, at 7:30 in the morning on the 1st, they broke my water. They also started me on pitocin, since I hadn't seemed to go too far. I had to get an internal contraction monitor put on to monitor the strength of my contractions (they didn't want to risk them getting too strong and possibly rupturing my old scars). My pitocin level was eventually put up to the maximum, my contractions were registering WAAAY up there, and I was still feeling not much pain. The pain I did feel came from back labor. I had a shot of demorol at this point, but nothing more. Everytime they would start to talk about a c-section, I would progress just a bit more. I got to a 6 and suddenly, my daughter's heartbeat dropped way low. I had been sleeping and woke up to the long, scary beep of her fetal monitor and the nurse rushing around, trying to get her heartbeat found again. Then she was calling the doc, saying she couldn't get the heartbeat. I don't know how long this lasted, but of course, to me, it felt like forever. My husband and family had gone to take a walk while I was sleeping, and I was all alone. I was TERRIFIED. Luckily, they were able to get her heartbeat again, and I later learned it was simply because of my positioning that her heartbeat went down like it did and then wasn't detected any longer. About 30 minutes later, they came in and asked what I thought about going for a c-section, and I readily agreed. I was terrified after what had happened and didn't want to risk my baby anymore.

Now, looking back, I realize that if I would've just understood that she was never in any danger, I would've kept trying and I believe I would've succeeded in finally having a VBAC. Sadly, my hubby says we are done having kids, so I probably won't get the chance to succeed.

Go for it if you feel strongly enough! There are so many reasons TO do it! (faster recovery, less depression for you, the miracle of seeing your baby born, etc.) I wish you luck, and hope you follow your heart. You'll do just fine! =0)

Take care, and keep us posted on how things go!
