I found out during my second pregnancy that it is very common to get a false positive result (which is what I had). My dr. explained to me that the AFP test was originally designed to detect spina bifida. I'm not sure how down's syndrome was added to the test results but just don't panic if you get a positive reading. I was so upset and had a triple test done (another blood work-up). During the time period I was waiting for these results I discovered several women who had the same experience. My second set of tests came back fine. I'm thinking, though, the only accurate way to detect downs syndrome is through an amnio. Hope this helps.
