First of all, I'm sorry to hear of your miscarriage. This is a common but very sad aspect of trying to have a baby.

Here is how I would likely advise a patient of mine with similar issues:

I would obtain a blood pregnancy level to make sure there is no molar pregnancy (see the archives or my free web page at home.mpinet.net/dahmd for information about molar pregnancies). One of the signs of a molar pregnancy is bleeding after a miscarriage. Next, I would probably perform a saline ultrasound to rule out retained placenta, which can also cause bleeding. If this were found, I would usually suggest outpatient hysteroscopy, which is better able to safely remove the placental tissue than a D&C. During a D&C the doctor cannot see inside the uterus, whereas with hysteroscopy he or she inserts a tiny tube and can visualize and treat all the abnormal areas.

In my experience if there is retained placenta this far out from a miscarriage, the odds of it passing spontaneously is very small. However, infection and scar tissue inside the uterus can develop, which may make it very hard to become pregnant later. That's probably why your doctor is concerned.

I sincerely hope that everything turns out well and that you have good luck in the future when you decide to try again for a baby.

Best wishes,
