Re: Trying to not get too excitedFrom: Nancy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 29 Sep 1999 14:31:59 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Jodi, First let me say that I hope that you are pregnant. I know how hard it is waiting to find out. It took my husband and myself 17 months to conceive our second child and every month I was excited when I thought I might be pregnant and in tears when I was not. Please, to preserve your sanity try to be patient (I know that this is easier said than done). Normal, healthy, fertile couples take on average, I believe 6-9 months to conceive. This is due to a varity of reasons (ie. poor sperm/poor egg - everyone has some, genetic abnormalities in the fertilized egg, failure to implant, poor timing of intercourse etc. etc.). I also noted that when I was following my cycle very closely hoping to be pregnant I discovered a whole range of symptoms that are just part of my cycle yet were similar to those of pregnancy (ie. sore breasts, cramping). Prior to trying to get pregnant I just ignored these symptoms as they were not important in my daily life. Suddenly when trying to get pregnant every cramp became important and with it the hope of pregnancy. Emotionally this rollercoaster can be quite stressful. It was for both me and my husband. So please be patient and try not to get too excited as it only makes it much harder if it turns out that you are not pregnant. That being said if you want more information on becoming pregnant (if sadly you are not pregnant this month, if you are, ignore everything I have said) I recommend "Taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschler - great book but even following its recomendations will introduce additional stress into your life (I stopped sleeping well when I noticed that my BBT didn't drop and when it did I was in tears again). Good luck and hope you see that little line in three or four days.
-- Nancy, due 10/9/99
