chemotherapy to treat breast cancer during pregnancyFrom: Robin (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 26 Sep 1999 22:57:49 -0500 (CDT)
I am 7 weeks pregnant and had a modified radical mastectomy five days ago. My doctors say I don't need radiation, but want to begin chemotherapy after I reach my twelfth week of pregnancy. They say studies have shown little effect on the fetus from the chemo, but admit there is a scarcity of research due the this seldom-occurring condition. Does anyone have any experience, information, or know where to refer my husband and I to get more information regarding the different types of chemotherapy or other alternative treatment, the potential side effects on the baby, specialists we could be referred to, etc? We live in South Dakota, but have the resources to travel for treatment. I'm also 46 years old, which adds to the level of risk to the baby. We just discovered both the pregnancy and the cancer twelve days ago, so our heads are swimming, and we just don't know where to turn at this point. Any advice or information would be most helpful. Thanks. Robin and Mike Stroup, P.O. Box 216, White River, South Dakota 57579, (605) 259-3288.
