Home pregnancy tests detect HCG in your urine, HCG levels rise as your pregnancy progresses. A negative result on an EPT test at this time would be normal since your period is a week away. I took EPT on the day my period was expected, and saw a very faint line. So put your worries away for now, your baby will come when he or she is meant to. Good Luck.
