I'm presuming it was a urine culture and not a urinalysis. The urine culture is the gold standard and will confirm the infection as well as confirming the antibiotic that the infection will be sensitive to.

There is also something called "asymtomatic bacteriuria". Bacteria in the urine without symptoms. This should still be treated because it can lead to symptomatic urinary infections and kidney infections if left untreated. Asymptomatic bacteriuria left untreated can also lead to preterm labor.
