At my age, how long do I wait for fertility treatment? From: chris (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 17 Sep 1999 11:11:14 -0500 (CDT)
My first pg was at age 23 in 1981 and ended with a premature bith at 25 weeks. Baby was normal and strong, lived 8 hours-just too small to survive. Was diagnosed with incompetent cervix. 4 months later, pg again and checked each week by dr. to put in cerclage. Cerclage was never done, went 3 weeks past due date, 8lb baby that was delivered by c/s after 27 hours of labor. Obviously, incompetent cervix was not a good diagnosis. Had half of thyroid removed between the first 2 pgs due to tumor. Have never had thyroid meds or problems since. Nearly bled to death after premature birth and had anestesia complications and infection after c/s. Decided I was lucky to have one healthy child and that I was not cut out to be a broodmare. DH and I never got sterilized, used a diaphragm sucessfully over the years until I became pg earlier this year at the age of 41. (My fault -left it in the dresser drawer one too many times.)Huge shock for both of us and our 17yr old but we were delighted. I went in for my check-up at 17 weeks and had a fetal demise, followed by a D&E. Had a lot of bleeding after surgery and took 2 months and progesterone therapy to quit bleeding and cycle again. Now I am ttc and on my second normal cycle. Had breast cancer at age 32 that was caught very early and has not recurred (partial mastectomy- no chemo). At my age and with my history, how long should I wait before seeking assistance if I don't get pg? I have 29-31 day cycles and am testing with OPKs- doesn't look like I have LPD or perimenopause but I know my biological clock has got to be heading for midnight. Also, do I need an RE or a specialist? I am unusually healthy in spite of my past. Thanks.
