Re: Pre-eclamosia, Hypertension, Normal ?From: Jody (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 31 Aug 1999 14:29:21 -0500 (CDT)
I can certainly understand your concerns because I was diagnosed with pre-ecclampsia with my first child and am now pregnant with twins and having to deal with chronic hypertension. A good book about twins is called simply "TWINS!" and can be found at Borders or Barnes and Nobles. It goes into detail about normal twin procedures and the extra risks involved. As for pre-ecclampsia, most doctors (in my experience) try to take a conservative approach. Minor to moderate pre-ecclampsia can be treated quite easily with bedrest and close monitoring. I spent the last 2 months of my pregnancy in bed, on my left side, and was delivered at 36.5 weeks, when ultrasounds showed a decrease in amniotic fluid. My son was 6 lbs. 14 oz, which is quite a good size for 36.5 wks. So, although ecclampsia can indeed turn fatal, the chances are that your wife will simply need bedrest. Although it is frightening to be diagnosed with such a condition, odds are with you that things will turn out ok. Always be attuned for the signs of ecclampsia (headache, blurred vision, etc), but try not to worry too much...the last thing your wife needs is a lot of stress! Good luck!
