Determining the baby's sex PRIOR TO fertilization

My boyfriend and I are starting to plan when to conceive our first child. The women at work have told me there are new studies published that say the type of diet a woman consumes PRIOR to conception can help choose the sex of the baby. They said if the vagina is more alkaline or more acidic, would determine which sex sperm gets through. Is there any truth to this?
