They would not be able to check for birth defects this soon, it was most likely to double-check the length of the pregnancy.

The OB says everything looks good. Is my sister-in-law's body >going to be able to handle this? What other factors should we worry

While it is sometimes a little hard on a woman to have two babies close together, it happens *all* the time -- think of all the people you have met who have a three-year-old and a four-year-old, or something like that. They must have been pregnant before the first was six months old. My mother had five babies fifteen months apart, which meant she had nine months pregnant, six months not, over and over again. If she is in good general health it may be tiring, but it won't be dangerous.

You don't say if she is breastfeeding, but many women have breastfed throughout pregnancy with no bad consequences -- La Leche League recommends doing so, especially for a baby who isn't even old enough for solids yet. I think with a baby so young she might well have to supplement, though, as the milk turns to colostrum later on in the pregnancy, and some women also get very sensitive nipples.

Best of luck.
