i really feel for you amy......i passed kidney stones six weeks after the birth of my son and that pain wasa worse than my c-sec!!! during my labor had a back pain in between contractions that my midwife and urologist believe was related to the stones. it was not unmanageable, but not comfortable either. i am a midwifery student and really cant comment with any degree of confidence on the medical questions you have. howevere, i would to say that fear is your worst enemy!! the more you fear something the harder it will be to do.......

good luck.
