Leslie, Congratulations on your new baby and on being alive!! Yes, this is an extremely rare event and one from which few persons recover without permanent disability. I'm not a Dr. but my understanding is that somehow a bit of amniotic fluid enters the bloodstream. This foreign material has much the same affect as a bubble of air or a blood clot, stopping airflow to the brain by one of a number of means. There was an article about another woman with an amniotic embolism in a recent Reader's Digest -- you definitely want to read it. As for discussing it with patients, well, there are literally hundreds of things which COULD go wrong in pregnancy or delivery. I would certainly want to know relevant risks, but think it would be absolutely impossible for physicians to cover all possible dangers plus, knowing these remote disorders would unsettle many patients and cause tons of needless worrying. The relevant dangers are bad enough! Val
