Hi! I have a son born at 33 weeks sue to pre-eclampsia (he actually was the size of a 29 weeker due to IUGR). He is now 3 years old. He had a grade 1 bleed when he was born and doesn't show any signs of it at all now. I also have a very dear friend who has a 30 week daugter (now 4) who had grade 3 bleeds (I think) and hydorcephalus. Other than her shunt (which you can't see) for the hydrocephalus, she acts like any other 4 year old little girl.

There is a mailing list group called preemie-l that is for people that have had preemies, know someone that have had a preemie, or are looking for information/support like you are. There are *many* people on this list that have had preemies from 23 weekers up to 34/36 weekers with varying bleeds. They would be able to give you support and information. There is a woman named Helen on this listserv who is a wonderful source of information. As far as I have been able to ascertain through research, etc., it is true that preemie girls tend to do better than boys and certain ethnic groups do better then others (caucasian boys are pretty much at the bottom of the list). Take heart, though, that babies born at 33 weeks have a great survival rate. Some of the "problems" we faced while our son was in the NICU were breathing (he was on the vent for awhile), jaundice (even full term babies get this), problems learning to feed (we never did get the hang of breast feeding - however another mommy/family we met in the NICU (29 weekers) BF with no problem at all), problems maintaining body temperature, apnea and bradycardia. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Good luck and best wishes for a FT delivery!!
