Breastfeeding vs Mag. SulfateFrom: Belinda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 30 Jul 1999 01:05:39 -0500 (CDT)
Recently we had a pt.in that had pre-eclampsia and hypertension, gestation at 36 weeks and was put on Mag. She very much wanted to breastfeed but was told by the OB/Gyn that she had to pump and dispose of her milk for at least 24 hrs. after her Mag. was dc'd. The mother was very distraught about not being able to nurse immediately. In 1994 AAP stated that Mag. Sulfate was compatable with breastfeeding immediately after birth. Until we (the CBE's) can come up with more data, this OB/Gyn will not let her pts. breastfeed after receiving Mag. Could anyone please enlighten me on this area and let me know how this is handled in other hospitals? Thank You
