Re: PAINFULperiods after miscarriageFrom: Mars (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Jul 1999 21:32:41 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Shanh, I'm sorry to hear of your m/c. :-( I haven't experienced this first hand, but I have heard of others who have had similar experiences. For one, I would talk to your doctor about it. Some theories I have are that 1) you could now have endometriosis. It can start anytime, and sometimes starts after a pregnancy. While it would seem more logical to happen after a full term pregnancy, because of what I know of the physiology of it, it certainly can and does happen even to people who've never been pregnant or had a m/c. Another theory 2) could it be that your uterus has stretched because of the pregnancy and is simply getting back into shape over the past two months (though this seems a bit long to me if it were the case). Otherwise, your hormones are out of whack. And also its undoubtably something that you're paying closer attention to now and perhaps its sort of like a "post traumatic stress" type thing where its natural to be more intuned to your body now for signs of future pregnancy and your periods are of course more dreaded now that you're still grieving your loss. :-( Stress can cause more painful periods too. I myself normally experience a wide variety in my periods, from the rare pain-free one to the ones you describe that are most common, where its just the first day or two of pain, to the extreme where I'm basically laid up for a few days and nothing seems to help. I don't have endo (thankfully), and quite honestly because of the pain I'd experienced, I'd thought that I would have it and was quite suprised that I didn't and could still experience that much pain!! Fortunately, mostly it falls in the middle and its tolerable with good doses of ibuprofen. I just attribute it to hormone variation and diet. Yams (sweet potatoes) have an estrogen like compound in them, and I love yams! Maybe things like that have something to do with it? Anyhow, take care of yourself and let us know what your doc says and how things are going for you. Good luck!
