Re: 23 weeks and getting contractionsFrom: Kathy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Jul 1999 13:04:55 PDT
There are many treatments for preterm labor. With Procardia you may still feel some contractions but it usually prevents labor (ie. the stronger contractions that yield cervical change). I would not worry about building up an immunity to them. Irritable uterus is just frequent little cramps that are nothing more. Sometimes they can be caused by stress or dehydration and I'm sure other things as well. My experience shows, when doing extended moinitoring, the irritability goes away when the mom goes to sleep and is well hydrated. It may return when the bladder starts to fill and then resolves shortly after mom voids. Basically, if your cervix is not changing, you are having preterm contractions, not preterm labor. Labor being defined as cervical change. True labor, either preterm or not, in my experience, will not be stopped by anything. Postponed briefly maybe, but not stopped. This is meant to put your mind at ease. If it is working for you, then everything is OK. Sorry this is so long. I tend to be a bit wordy. KG You may reply to me at: <kat52gre@excite.com>
