what is ascites please? (fluid in abdomen)

My wife (who is 40 years old, 25 weeks pregnant) had an ultrasound a few days ago showing fluid in the baby's abdomen. "ascites" is the term on the paperwork

We wee hoping that someone could shed some light on the likely causes/ outcomes of this condition (I've included what we know already in the hope that it is helpful..)

We had an amniocentesis which shows no chromosome disorders (or at least not trisomy 13/18/21 - if that's the right numbers!! :^)

The babys heartbeat sounds good, ultrasound shows heart seems ok. Fetal movement is moderate (but not diminished)

The baby is quite small (430 grams or so) and our only previous pregnancy (1995) the baby suffered severe intra-uterine growth retardation (due to reduced placental function i think). My wife showed signs of pre-ecclampsia at the time and the baby was delivered by emergency c-section at 28 weeks (but only 500grams) and did not survive.

We are grateful that the baby has no chromosome problems, and it looks like the heart is ok (or woould that be the case anyway?)

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. If it's not too much trouble please email your comments to brad@iimage.net.au as I can check my mail more easily than logging on to this site ...

Thanks everybody Brad
