Hi Tami,

As best as I can explain: The "luteal phase" from what I know, is the phase of the menstrual cycle that begins immediately after ovulation. The act of ovulation produces an egg and a spot on the ovary where the egg erupted from called the "corpus luteum". The "job" of this corpus luteum place on the ovary is to produce progesterone for supporting a fertilized egg up until the placenta is formed and can take over producing progesterone. I believe that if your progesterone levels are taken a few days before the beginning of your next cycle and they are lower than is to be expected, its a sign that the corpus luteum is not functioning as it should and that means that if fertilization were to occur, a very early miscarriage could result from there not being enough progesterone to support the implantation of the very young embryo (blastocyst). Progesterone has the effect of promoting blood vessel growth in the uterine walls and keeps it from contracting.

Clomid, I have come to another conclusion that is perhaps a luteal phase defect could be caused by a follicle stimulating or lutenizing phase defect. Because it makes sense to me that if, as I've observed on my own ultrasounds for IUI proceedures, a woman ovulates too early in the cycle or ovulates on time but with follicles that aren't "ripe" or big enough, than it seems logical that the resulting corpus luteum would also be smaller and thus less able to provide the amount of progesterone needed.
