Re: fear of epiduralFrom: Kathy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 26 Jul 1999 14:11:00 PDT
Don't let the epidural keep you awake. Let me clarify some points. 1) a needle is used just for insertion. It does NOT remain in your back. 2) the catheter they leave in is no larger than a heavy fishing line. It is soft and flexible and you won't even feel it. 3) your back is numbed prior to insertion. You will feel a sting from the numbing medicine but otherwise all you really feel is pressure. 4) the benefits of a good epidural far outweigh the discomfort you feel at insertion. 5) if they weren't so effective, people would not want to have them for their labor. 6) you do NOT have to have one. It is a personal decision. Ask you health care provider for literature of the variety of methods of pain control. This might put your mind at ease. WE are most afraid of the unknown. Become aware of what is available so you can chose your preferences. You may reply to me at: <kat52gre@excite.com>
