Re: General anaesthetic in early pregnancy

Dear Melissa, I am not a medical professional, but have had a similar experience. Before I suspected that I was pregnant (now 26 weeks) I had my bottom wisdom teeth removed. Although I did not have general anesthesia, I was totally out of it on Valium. About a week after the surgery I missed my period, took a test and realized I was pregnant. I totally freaked out, I was so worried. Upon contacting my oral surgeon and O.B., I was relieved to learn that although oral surgery is certainly not recommended during pregnancy, it was unlikely that a single such episode would have any effect on a very early pregnancy. Basically, during the first two weeks (before many women suspect they are pregnant) of a pregnancy nature gives us a little grace period wherein many of life's indiscretions have little or no effect on a developing embryo. My doctor also noted that any significant injury to the pregnancy at that early stage would likely result in miscarriage, but not a birth defect in an ongoing, successful pregnancy. I had an ultrasound at 18 weeks and my little girl appeared to be in great shape, perfectly normal in every way. Although she has not been born we have no reason to believe that she is anything other than fine despite her mother being totally high on Valium one day very early in her life. See your O.B. as soon as possible and hopefully he/she will have reassuring things to say.

Rebecca
