SUAFrom: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 17 Jul 1999 15:28:41 -0500 (CDT)
I am currently 181/2 weeks pregnant, 37y.o., who had US and amnio at 16wks. At that time they diagnosed a two vessel chord, normal US, normal amnio results, normal AFP. My OB doc has not really said much about the potential problems related to this except that sometimes there are associated chromosomal abnormalities, which I obviously don't have. After researching the net I am finding multiple possible anomalies which I don't think are detected by amnio. These include renal agenesis, hypoplasia, renal dysgenesis, horseshoe kidney, pelvic kidney, hydro ureeter, and hydronephrosis, FGR, toxemia, IUGR, and stillbirth! Additionally, one article stated a 25-50% chance of congenital malformations (genitourinary, cardiovascular, facial, and musculoskeletal) in infants with SUA. The more information I find, the more controversy there seems to be. I am waiting for a formal recommendation from the perinatal center that did the US, and in the meantime don't have an OB visit for another month. I am feeling very uncomfortable that this is being looked at so lightly, and wondering if I am overreacting due to my medical background? Is a targeted US helpful at this point since the amnio was normal? Should I be requesting a referral to a perinatologist, and a repeat US with color doppler ? At what gestational age would you begin every 2-4wk US? Thanks for your input.
