Re: procedures other than stitiches to pervent miscarrageFrom: Marshella (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 9 Jul 1999 22:31:44 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Kathleen, This is one of the dreaded pregnancy proceedures I hope I don't have to end up needing! However, I've heard it is very successful and done fairly often for an incompetent cervix. The proceedure you describe I believe is called a cervical cerclage. I've never heard of any other way to treat this condition (where the cervix opens or shortens too early due to baby's weight/pressure upon it). The basket you describe could it be that you've heard of the proceedure described in such a way as that a sort of "basket" is made with the stitches, that helps hold the cervix together? Because as I understand it, think of the cervix as a widened straw, it would make sense to keep it from widening that you want to stitch around it and under it, not through it, and this would have an effect of something like a basket, weaves around so-to-speak. I may be way off base, someone correct me if I am please, as this is "just off the top of my head". :-) There are also pregnancy support devices like giant wide ace-bandages that are worn externally under your clothes and that are supposed to help support a pregnant belly and lessen stretch marks or backache (I don't think these claims are medically "supported" however - pun intended!), but I've not heard about them for this condition, and I wouldn't think they'd have much effect either. But as the saying goes something to the effect of "any port in a storm". :-) Take care and keep us updated on how your relative is progressing. Mars and baby-to-be 2/10/00
