Hi Christine,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby!!

After my daughter was born over a year ago I asked my family doc and the pediatrician who examined her in the hospital the same thing. They both said breastmilk contained everything the baby needs and there was no need to give her any vitamin drops or supplements. I did and still do continue to take my prenatal vitamins plus extra calcium (with vit D). My 15 mos old still nurses as often as she did at 6 mos!

Also, here is what William Sears, MD (pediatrician) has to say on the subject in his book, "The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two":

"Does my breastfed baby need extra water and vitamins?

<snip> A healthy full-term baby who is getting enough breast milk does not need vitamin supplements, unless recommended by your doctor for your baby's special nutritional needs. Occasionally doctors may recommend vitamin supplements for a breastfed baby if the mother's diet is suspect."

I hope this helps.
