Some factors that could influence this are being overweight (as I am), your dates being a bit off, baby being in a funny position or "under" the pubic bone at the time, and/or having an anterior placenta (as I do - placenta is in front of uterus instead of the back - just a variation of normal). I would suggest returning for another check with the dop-tone, and if you're still unable to get it and are very worried, request a quick ultrasound to confirm the heartbeat. That's what I did since I knew there was no way my mind would sit well without knowing for sure. (My first baby died in utero so I just knew I wouldn't wait until the next appointment to find out all was okay!) Take care,
