Re: Lupus and pregnancyFrom: Dr. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 24 Jun 1999 04:04:07 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Sarah This area is a very difficult one to advise on. I deal with a lot of patients with unusual autoimmune disease in pregnancy and they are all different. There is also a huge number of syndromes and disease names (e.g. Lupus/SLE/Sjogren's etc) but they all tend to be lumped together into two "headings" either Antiphospolipid antibodies or RAFS (reproductive autoimmune failure syndrome). Depending on the types and amounts of antibodies present (and different labs get different results!) depends on where in the spectrum you fall. the conditions are certainly associated with recurrent miscarriage, severe pre eclampsia and severe growth retardation/placental dysfunction. Many patients however go through pregnancy without trouble! In your situation the most important thing is to get excellent pre pregnancy assessment and counselling. This needs the input of a specialist in MFM who has a special interest in this area. In some cases treatment with aspirin (75mg a day) and heparin (daily injections) will convert an 80% pregnancy failure rate into an 80% success rate. Go see a specialist befoer you get pregnent!
