Of course ther is no way to be sure over the internet/Email for sure, but I worry about kidney infection, with your complaints of one sided back pain with fever and chills. This can be serious. I would not wait for an "appointment coming up", I think you should be seen sooner than that just to rule this out if nothing else. I would wonder also about a possible kidney stone or partial blockage due to stone or twisted ureter on the L side. Either way, I would error on the side of caution and call your doc or the doc taking calls for him to be seen asap. Pyelonephritis (kidney infection) is one the causes of preterm labor also. Of course, just my thoughts, but if I received this call while at work from a patient, I would instruct them to come in and be seen.
