Sleeping on your back in the third trimester may not be a good idea because the baby's weight presses on your inferior vena cava ( do I have my anatomy right docs?) This can impeed blood flow and make you dizzy and/or short of breath and decrease the blood flow to your baby. Most women find they can't get comfy flat on their backs because of this. Reclining at an angle is fine and can be very comfortable. If you can get comfortable this way, sleeping on your left side with a pillow between your knees is best. Your heart pumps most efficiently and with less effort when you are on your left side due to the anatomy of the heart. A good cardiology site probably has nifty graphics of the emptying and filling of the atria and ventricles if you want to get down and dirty with cardiac anatomy. BTW, if you are having indegestion lie on your right side-this may help your stomach empty faster.
