Edema at 5-6 weeks pregnancy normal?

I just found out that I'm pregnant last week, and for the past 4 days I have had significant edema (2+ at least) in both lower extremities distal to my knees. I've also increased a whole ring size in my hands in a week's time. I am limiting my sodium to 2 gm per day and keeping my legs elevated as much as possible. The only time the edema resolves is when I wake up every morning, and then it returns after I've been out of bed 30-60 minutes. What causes this, is this normal this early in pregnancy, and is there anything else I can do? My physician told me to call if I had any problems, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Thanks in advance.
