Hi Robin,

Point well taken. I should have been more concise in what I was saying, I guess. The "last resort" thing makes perfect sense, ESPECIALLY if baby is using an artificial nipple this early and ESPECIALLY if there may be issues with improper latch & positioning (my main theory). All those things combined with using a nipple shield may indeed be a recipe for diminishing milk supply, if allowed to continue too long. Hopefully, if the latch/positioning can be improved and comfort measures help decrease the pain as well, there will be no need to turn to a nipple shield. I would still suggest trying EVERYTHING else I wrote in my post before turning to the shields, just because I've heard of so many stories where they weren't so lucky with the shields. Glad you weren't in that group!
