Hopefully, if the latch/positioning can be improved and comfort measures help decrease the pain as well, there will be no need to turn to a nipple shield. I would still suggest trying EVERYTHING else I wrote in my post before turning to the shields, just because I've heard of so many stories where they weren't so lucky with the shields.
