**I've heard of this before and I'm sure there's truth to it. I've also heard of some women not being able to wean their babies off the shield for many weeks. But my experience has not proven this. Quite the opposite, the shield saved my nipples from being sucked right off, lol!

Seriously, with my 4th child my nipples were so badly injured by his suckling that they bled and my baby actually spit up my blood a few times. I think he was getting as much blood as colostrum! I used the shield for about a week, just until my nipples were well on their way to being healed, although they were not completely there yet. I put a coating of lanolin on them before I put the shield on and then they got a nice lanolin massage while the baby nursed :). I have a friend who also used a different type of shield, not the clear silicone one but a stiff tube that fitted over the nipple and extended to a soft nipple for the baby. With this shield the baby's mouth was completely removed from the mother's nipple, although the nipple was still drawn out into the tube. I haven't seen this type since though. Anyway, my friend had no trouble getting her baby to latch onto her directly when her nipples were healed, and her milk supply didn't suffer either. Certainly these are things you should be very aware of, and as I said in my original post, you should avoid using the shield at all if you can manage to.

However I remember how much pain I was in with my 4th baby and how grateful I was when my hubby brought me my nipple shield! I had no problems with milk supply or with getting him to latch on when I stopped using the shield. Not everyone has problems, but do only use this as a last resort.

best wishes,
